NineGaps -Math Puzzle Game Review

31 May

9gaps_play

Nine Gaps is a simple yet addictive maths puzzle game. It reminds me of my maths assignments when I am still in schooling days.

In this game, you have to solve the three maths equations in order to go to the next stage.

9gaps_difficulty

You can play this game in easy, medium or hard difficulty levels. The numbers are like small pieces of colored paper with numbers on them. You can remove them by tapping on them and throw them aside. To “overwrite” another number, you just need to place another number onto the piece.

9gaps_rules
The numbers can only be used once in the game.If you place the numbers in the boxes, you cannot re-use it again. You can reset the game if you feel you mess up the puzzle.

If you have placed the numbers in the equation correctly, the end result will be colored green to denote correct while brown to denote wrong answer and there will be a trumpet sound for incorrect entries.

9gaps_score
Once you got all the answers correct, there will be children saying “yeah” to congratulate you on your success. Overall, I feel this game is worth buying because it is simple to play and yet the user interface is done quite nicely. There isn’t any feature that I can find fault about this game.

Parachute Panic Game Review

31 May

PP_MAIN
I recently found another game called Parachute Panic. This game is a hand-drawn game similar to scribattle. However, the rules of this game is to direct and land a handful of parachutists onto passing boats.

PP_level3
There are obstacles along the way which hinders you from rescuing them such as helicopter blades, thunder clouds and UFOs.

PP_level1

PP_level2
To play this game, you need to tap on each skydiver so they can deploy their parachutes. The game does not end here. You need to swipe left or right to control the wind direction so they can be directed to the boats below. However, do watch out for sharks and boats that are about to leave. Don’t chase after the boats which are leaving or you will find them dropping into the water and become the shark’s meal instead.

parachute_panic_main2
Of course, if you feel sympathetic about the skydivers being abducted by aliens or kill by helicopter blades, you can tap on the flying aircrafts five times to destroy them.

PP_gameover

PP_shark

Overall, I like the “game is over” song which is played when your game ends. It is hilarious and it shows the shark smiling or grinning when your scores are below standards. When you rescue more people, it shows another sad expression since it cannot eat the parachutists.

PP_stats
The game also stores your statistics of your previous games and you can see how you fare compared to your recent game. When playing this game, I feel relaxed and enjoyed the experience of saving the skydivers. I think the game does well by helping to add some hilarious bits to the game as well as the cool statistics feature to track your progress.

Flowerz Game Review

31 May

WL_main

Flowerz is a beautiful match 3 game with nice nature background sounds and colorful graphics. It gives the player a chance to experience planting waterlilies in a little pond.

WL_lily1

WL_lily2

The rules of this game are simple. All you have to do is to construct rows or columns of 3 or more flowers of the same color. To finish the level, you need to place all the flowers from the queue on the top right hand corner onto the board.

Each tap I make on the board will make a water sound as if a lily is being dropped into the pond. This game can be played in classic or expert mode.

WL_level4

The flowers in this game have an inner and outer color. The inner color is the color of the flower which will grow again once the original flower becomes part of a match. This feature makes the game continuous and unique compared to other match 3 games.

WL_special

There are some help or tips available in the game once you are stuck. There are certain achievements you can get during playing the game. This motivates the player to obtain higher scores. For example, I have gotten Canny Cultivator in the game.

WL_achievement

WL_dragonfly

For instance, you can use the dragonfly in the queue to place it onto any flower and the flower will change its color to match the color of the dragonfly. This helps you create a match and clear some flowers on the board.

WL_trowel

You can also use the trowel to dig out a flower and place it on another location on the board.

There are more than 20 levels in this game. It will only end once the board runs out of empty space. Once you complete the game, you can submit your own game scores online and compete against other people from different countries.

Overall, I feel this game is worth getting because the graphics are great and the game play is different from the other match 3 games out there.

iCutter Game Review

31 May

iCutter_main

iCutter is a casual game where you need to help the guy get to his girlfriend. You have to use your finger to reposition the knife in this game to split objects like cheese, strings or chocolates and other joints.

iCutter1

The number of cuts available at each level is fixed so you have to decide where exactly you need to slice so you will not waste the “cut”. Good planning is needed in this scenario. Also, timing is important if the game level has a pendulum swinging in the air. You need to wait for the pendulum to knock the guy in a certain position before you make the slice, so that the blocks will topple and he can meet his girlfriend. The cheese or string can be sliced or split while things made of chocolate cannot be sliced since chocolate is hard.

iCutter3

iCutter2

You have to collect strawberry to obtain points in this game. The game is based on pure physics so tilting your idevice will not help in your game progress here. Once you help the couple meet each other, lots of hearts will appear on the game screen.

iCutter_level

iCutter_couple

I have cleared up to stage 7 for this game at the moment. All I can say is you need to define at which angle you need to cut sometimes. Different angle cuts produce different results. If you failed to complete the stage, you can restart the level and try again. You can also replay the previous levels you completed.

Overall, I feel this game is fun due to the fact you need to think where to make the slice using the knife and you cannot cheat using the iPhone accelerometer as this game depends on pure physics for the guy to meet the gal. You can get this game for your girlfriend when valentine day approaches. I am sure she will like it!

WestBang Game Review

31 May

westbang_doors

This game has an interesting way to define easy, medium and hard game difficulty levels. Easy game mode translates to “the good” with automatic reload, slower bandits, extra life for $5,000, shorter levels and level restarts on deaths. Medium game mode named as “the bad” will have manual reload, normal bandits, extra life for $10,000, standard levels and game over on death. The hard game mode on this game is named “the ugly” with manual reload, faster bandits and game over on death.

westbang_shot

These three phrases if combined together gives a phrase “The good, the bad and the ugly” like an traditional wild wild west shooting game.

westbang_char1

I feel it is tricky to play this game as there are certain characters you cannot shoot like old lady or child or man or young lady holding money bag. These civilians will appear together with the bandits when the doors open. You have to co-ordinate your eyes together with your fingers tapping on the right person to aim. If you shoot the civilians, it will be game over for you.

westbang_char2

You also cannot shoot the bandits until they draw their guns. If you shoot them before they draw their gun, you will lose the game. This adds another difficulty layer over the current game as sometimes the doors open with fast shooter bandits together with slow shooter bandits. You have to kill the fast shooter bandits first. If you wait for the slow bandits to draw their guns, you will be finished off by the fast bandits. This scenario is certainly a chicken and an egg scenario deciding on who comes first to shoot at. There are 21 bandits to face in this game so you will not bored playing against the same types of bandits at each difficulty game mode.

westbang_ctrls

The game encourages the player to play continuously as each correct gun shot aimed at the bandit will guarantee some amount of money gained in the game like a bounty. The score on how much money you earned is shown on the top left corner of the game screen.

westbang_Scores

The ugly game difficulty mode is using four doors instead of the usual three doors found in the rest of the game modes. If you are up to the challenge, you can try “the ugly” game mode in westbang.

One game tip I found while playing this game in easy and medium game modes is that you need to position your right hand’s thumb on the first door while the left hand’s thumb focus on the last door since there are in total three doors. If there are any bandits in the middle door, I will tap on the middle door using my right hand’s thumb. This will enable me to shoot at the bandits more accurately so I will not die so early in the game.

westbang_scoreboard

This game supports online scoreboards so you can submit your scores to compare with the rest of Westbang players from around the world.

Addictiveness: 5 /5

It is available on the iTunes AppStore since today, May 29th 2009 for a grand opening sale price of just $0.99.

parachute_panic_1

This unique casual game requires you to successfully land a host of parachutists into passing boats. Beware of imminent dangers such as helictopter blades, U.F.O´s, sharks and thunder clouds.

parachute_panic_main2

The game offers beautiful hand drawn graphics, smooth animations, catchy music and awesome sound effects. In addition to that we created funny animations for any failed enemy encounter.

parachute_panic_2

parachute_panic_3

Parachute Panic gathered a lot of interest from gamers when we uploaded a preview video onto YouTube, showing the Alpha version running on an iPhone. The unique graphics style and fresh game play quickly captured people´s hearts.

The YouTube video can be found here:

HOW TO PLAY
- deploy parachutes by tapping on a falling skydiver
- swipe anywhere to draw wind and influence their movements
- destroy some obstacles by tapping on them 5x

parachute_panic_main

GAMEPLAY HINTS:
- When you generate wind into a specific direction, the parachutist follows it a few seconds and any further wind in the same direction doesn´t have an effect. So during this time where you can´t push him further you can concentrate on another spot.
- When you see that the ship leaves the screen on one side, don´t try to follow it. Move the parachutists into the other direction where the ship comes back in. You will find out it´s easier to catch them.
- Thunder clouds are indestructible, but they have only one electric charge. In some situations you should sacrifice a parachutist to save a whole group of others if the action on the screen reaches a totally chaotic situation.
- Slow down the falling speed by generating updrafts. To do this, swipe upwards.
