Archmage Defense is a castle defense game where you control a skeleton wizard to protect your castle tower from human invasions. The game can be played in three game modes – Easy, Normal and Hard.
When you killed each human warrior, you gain some soul points which can be used to research or upgrade your new spells or repair your tower’s defense. Sometimes, if you kill more than one enemies, it will be counted as a combo move.
There are a few spells to learn for this game – Mana capacity, Chain Lightning damage, Hellfire and Frozen Touch.
Mana capacity is your ability to cast your spells. Without Mana, you are as good as dead when the humans invade your castle. Chain lightning is your basic spell when the game starts. To use chain lightning, you will have to drag and draw a line from the tower to the enemies. This spell can be upgraded to greater heights to make more damage to the enemies. Sometimes, I try to drag a line to a spot where most of the enemies walk. If I am successful, the whole gang will be electrocuted.
Hellfire is fire from hell which will burn your enemies to ashes once you draw circles around them. This spell has a widespread attack compared to the frozen attack spell. Frozen touch will trap your enemies in a block of ice and disable them from moving forward to attack you. I find using frozen touch effective against the green human archers as they are capable of long-range attacks.
This game does supports having a companion to fight side by side with you. However, you can only summon the skeleton archer using 6,500 soul points. Basically, this extra character will attack enemies automatically without your intervention. You can upgrade his level too in the game by using the same soul points you used for upgrades.
However, if you find the game getting slow, you can purchase the Gryphon’s Fury as an in-game purchase using your iTunes’ credits. This special item has two spells to learn: Summon Golem and Earthquake. It also includes three new enemies: Knight, Gryphon and Wizard. It also allows you to customize the appearance of the Skull castle with additional three game save slots. The in-game purchase lets you enable the weather. When you use some spells, the bad weather will affect the effects of your spells on the enemies.
Overall, I find this game easy to play but you need to constantly upgrade your spells and increase the Mana capacity to handle the onslaught of the waves of the human attackers. The graphics are cute but there are evil laughter by the skeleton wizard from time to time when you play this game. To add to the replay value of this game, there are various classes of human attackers that will appear in the game when you played deeper into the levels.
