Year 2013 in review for this blog – Thanks to all.

31 Dec

The stats helper monkeys prepared a 2013 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 15,000 times in 2013. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 6 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

Luxor Evolved iPad Game Review

12 May

I played this arcade game on my iPad when it is released. Being a vivid gamer, I like games that are similar to the games you find in the arcade. This game does just that. It is a bit noisy though but the fun you get out of playing this game is totally worth it. The game is universal so you can play it on your iPad or iPhone.

If you ever played the first version of Luxor, this game is similar. You control a magical winged shooter and you need to shoot the coloured spheres that moves towards you. The only trick here is that the ones you shoot must be of the same colour from your winged shooter.

The game reminds me of the movie Tron. Everything in this game is digital. When the enemy gems are destroyed, they disappear into digital debris. If the chains of gems reach the end of the line, you will lose your life. The number of lives you have is indicated by the number on the top right hand corner of the game screen.

Sometimes, you can make combos or hits depending on your accurate shooting. There are always power-ups that drop for you to pick up. There are certain power-ups that change your firing style or make the whole game scene SLOW like the movie Matrix. It does not matter whether you are slow in reflexes. The game concentrate more on accurate shooting. It certainly helps if you like match 3 games like Bejeweled from Popcap Games. Because you can use your expertise in Match 3 games over here in Luxor Evolved.

The battle scenes will change accordingly to make the gamer feel less bored. You will not expect what is coming in the next level. For example, my scores has been great and I managed to unlock a secret level where I battle against Pac Man nemesis.

Moreover, the game allows you to take part in boss fights and you can unlock secret levels using your own achieved scores.

Overall, I feel this game has potential. It is one of those gems you can find on iTunes App Store that is worth your time to play. The game originally retails for $4.99 and lowers to a sale price of 99 cents now. You will enjoy this game for a buck and it does not burn a hole in your pocket. So what are you waiting for?

The Island: Castaway Game Review for iPad

16 Mar

The Island: Castaway game is an adventure simulation game where you play as one of the survivors of a shipwreck. You need to find items on the island for food to have the energy to run around to find  objects you need to complete the tasks. Along the way, you will find fruits like lemons, coconuts. Keep these handy in your inventory as you never know when you might need them as energy sources.

You will also be involved in digging for baits in soft ground. The baits can be used for fishing. To be able to dig, you need to find a box that has the equipment. After you find the box, you need to approach the Indian guy who will hand you the shovel from the box. The same thing will happen for the fishing rod.

To be able to cook the fish you catch, you need to approach the sailor for a recipe. He will give you the recipe to cook the fish you just caught. Catching a fish using the fishing rod requires skill as well. You need to reel in the fish slowly to be able to catch the fish. If you reel it in too fast, the line will break and you will waste your bait as well as the fish.

There is a survival manual which is 6 pages that will guide you how to fish, dig for baits and catch the animals like crabs or wild boars.

You can also engage in conversations with the other characters of the shipwreck. You will need the fire to roast the fish you just caught. You might be wondering how do I get the fire started in the first place. The game will teach you how to start a fire by finding branches and twigs in the game.

This game keeps me addicted as it evolves around talking to people and learning new survival skills in the game. It is one of those games where you actually learn something without knowing it! Furthermore, when you are tired of running around, you can actually talk to the people around you to find out more about themselves.

After you caught a fish, you will find the fish will appear in your inventory. Similarly,  you will find the cooked fish as food in your inventory after you mastered the recipe to cook the fish.

The game will auto-save your game progress as you move along in the game so you do not need to worry you will lose progress of your game if it suddenly hangs on your iPad.

You will also get trophies in the game after you mastered some essential skills.

Overall, I find this game pretty interesting because it tasks the gamer to do certain tasks and rewards them in return with trophies. It gives the player an fulfilling experience that he can never forgets as the process of learning a new skill is rewarding as well.

Currently, you can give this game a try as it is free but to unlock the full game, you need to do an in-app purchase.

The music in this game is enchanting as well. It can help you relax your mind while you are playing the game. I will certainly recommend those people who like such adventure and survival games to download the game and try it for themselves.

“Boy Loves Girl” Game Review

13 Feb

If you are lonely during this valentine’s day, you can try out this game called “Boy Loves Girl”. The game starts with you flying a kite which is shaped like a moon. Once you fly your kite to the end of the road, you sort of win some of your girl’s affections. The road to love is not easy at all.

Other reviews about this game:

3.5/5 – (
‘It makes a pleasant change to play something so full of charm and originality.’
‘Each of the seven different worlds is as creative as the last’
4/5 – (
‘the game has gotten a ton of new updates that make it even greater.’
3/4 – (
‘every inch of this game’s artwork is adorable’
‘it’s just too cheek-pinchingly charming to put down for long.’
‘Cute, entertaining, and surprisingly challenging!’
‘it’s a really simple puzzle game that does get more complicated over time’
‘well done ‘Boy Loves Girl’ developers we salute you.’

There are a few obstacles in the way. You need to slide your finger down to move the kite down and do the reverse to fly the kite to greater heights to avoid touching the angry clouds. Yes, you heard me right. The clouds are jealous of your kite. They can either eat away parts of your kite or reduce it to dust with the lightning.

The game does begin each part of the courtship with some challenges. You need to remember what to get or do while flying the kite. The challenges will not be repeated again.

Once the line of your kite is cut, your hopes of getting the girl is gone like the wind.

As you play this platform game, you can admire the funny animated graphics that pass you by while making your character run after the girl.

One of the disadvantages of this game is that you need to complete the challenges to unlock the next level. But this is also what makes me addicted to the game. You can try the level again and again till you get the hang of it. The game runs on iPad and iPhone so you only need to pay once to get the game on all of your Apple devices.

Anooki Jump Game Review

2 Dec

This is one of the easiest to play casual games on the iPhone so far. You play as either Anook or Nooki who needs to bounce off the white bricks to elevate themselves to greater heights. The objective of this game is simple. You need to collect as many letters as many as you can while you jump. I know it is not simple to do two things at one time. But you can try this game a few times until you get the hang of it.

For me, jumping off the blocks is easy. I just need to master the gathering of letters portion of the game.

If you fall off any of the white bricks while jumping on them, it will be game over for you. Sound easy enough for you?

Go download the game on iTunes now. You can probably challenge your friends by comparing the scores you made. There is an email feature where you can invite your friends to download this game and try on their iPhones as well. If you like to boost your scores on social networks like Facebook and Twitter, it can be done too.

RPM: Gymkhana Racing Game Review

18 Nov

This racing game is just released by BulkyPix. To make a racing game a success in the iTunes App Store isn’t easy. Most of the time, the gamers will complain that the game controls are bad, i.e. they are unable to steer the car in a certain direction they wanted.

In RPM: Gymkhana Racing, there are three types of controls you can choose from. There are standard controls like the left, right, up and down controls for the Novice driver. For those whose are experts in driving games, they can either go for the full wheel or half wheel navigation controls.

The most important part of this game is to get the game controls that actually fits your driving skills. You need to drive around to accumulate the “drift” and sometimes avoid banging into items on the road to get the most points.

The game lets you experiment driving around in different cities.  When driving around in Tokyo, I get to experience the noisy city. There are sounds of pedestrians  talking when I am driving. You need to complete all the objectives of the current city before you can unlock the next game level.

Before the race in the city begins, you will be shown a set of objectives you need to complete in the city.

After your race finishes, you can preview the actual driving progress shown via a video right in front of you. This feature is rare in racing game but this game actually has it. You can also view your scores after each race. You can retry the level to improve your scores or go into the next race.

For example, I am a rookie driver. I kept banging into objects on the road. The video footage does help me to improve in the next race as it helps to show me where are my weaknesses.

This racing game is as real as it gets. When your car swirls in the road, there are wheel marks on the road. Sometimes, the smoke from your engine can be seen when you navigate your car. There are some techno music to accompany you when you drive too.

What is lacking in this game is there are no multi-player support in this game. You cannot play this game with your friends. But, you can share the video footage with your friends and take turns to try this game.

If you love driving alone and venturing into new unknown cities with your driving skills, this game is for you. This game is selling for $2.99 on iTunes App Store. You can play this game on iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch which actually justifies the $2.99 price tag.

Jelly Defense Game Review

16 Nov

I enjoyed playing this game because it is one of those tower defense games which has nice music and wacky sounds when you interact with the game itself.

The interesting part of this game is the game level selection phase. When you turn the globe too fast, it will have a “woah” sound. Besides playing tower defense levels inside the game, you can also participate in small game levels where you can earn more gold coins. An example is the “Fortune Field”.

Occasionally, when you choose a level, it will warn you of those monsters which you need to take note of before you start the level.

The main objective of this game is to protect your green gems fall into the hands of the enemy monsters. The monsters are in red or blue and have different characteristics. To fight the red monsters, you need to have a red tower or a semi red and blue tower. To fight the blue monsters, you can use the blue machine gun tower. When blue monsters pass by the red towers, the red towers can’t do anything so they will be sleeping. The same scenario will happens when red monsters pass by the blue towers. As for the semi blue and red towers, they are not really powerful in handling massive attacks by the red monsters. You need to build red towers specially to handle these attacks.

The game has a variety of landscapes where you start your tower defense adventures. In each of the landscapes, you need to change your strategy of placement of your units. What may work in the previous levels may not work again in the next levels.

As you kill each of the invading monsters, make sure you collect the gold coins they left behind. The money allows you to buy new defence units to fight against the invading force. Also, watch out for the number of remaining green gems you have. Once you have zero green gems, the game will end.

This game has all the elements I could ever wish of in a game. Every action you make will result in a sound being produced. In some of the new levels, a different music tune can be heard.

However, there is no useful information about the bosses under the help section. You can however tap on them when they appear in the game to find out more about their strengths and weaknesses.

BulkyPix’s Grave Defense HD Game Review

31 Oct

This game is one of the first tower defense game BulkyPix has published. The game has two gameplay modes- Campaign and Survival. If you like story mode, you can go along with Campaign mode.  For people who just want a fast game, they will choose Survival mode.

What I like about this game is that it provides an encyclopaedia for  the different towers, mutants, bonuses and ranks used in the game. If you are in doubt, you can tap on the question mark button to see more of this. It kind of helps you to see what kind of enemies you are up against.

There are a wide variety of towers in this game. The most frequently used tower is the mini gun. It costs $200 which costs the least among all the towers. I can easily buy this tower a few times in the game itself. The another tower I like to use is the Tesla coil. It sends out lightning volts to electrify the enemies.

The positions where you can place the towers are fairly fixed in this game. You just need to see where your towers can do the most damage before you tap on the area to put them. You can sell the towers away to change positions but it will incur some penalty in terms of the total cash you have. You will find that you get less money after selling them and you can only buy certain towers that are within your budget.

Once a mutant is killed, you need to pick up the $5 money coins. When the amount is large, the money is deposited directly into your account.

What I feel is missing from this game is when the mutants are killed, they died silently. There are no noises heard after killing them. Most of the time, you hear the sound of the gunfire and the specific sound that alerts you to collect the coins. The game however has some nice retro music when you exit from the game menu. You can easily follow the developers on Facebook and Twitter as there are such buttons in this game.

The game is a universal build and runs for iPhone and iPad. So, you only need to pay once to have it on both your iDevices.

Graphics: 3.6 /5
Sound/Music: 4 / 5
Fun: 4/5
Addictiveness: 5 / 5

The game can be downloaded on iTunes for $2.99:

Check out this game on Halloween if you are stuck at home and have nowhere to go. It can certainly help you to kill some time for this Halloween.
