9000 BC – A Tribal Game Review

30 Sep

There are a few similar Tribal games on the iTunes AppStore like Rockifone’s A Tribe War and CDE’s Ancient Tribe. Each of this tribal games has a different game play to it. To decide which game best suits you, you have to check out each game’s game play.

For 9000 BC, the game controls is very creative. Initially, I am taught that I need to feed myself with fishes from the sea to gain energy to fight against the enemies. After that, I need to throw spears against the other tribal enemies to kill them by tapping on the boy and dragging the spear towards them to kill them. Birds from the sky will fly down and attack me. I need to drag the birds off with my finger to kill them. Different enemies call for different finger gestures.

The tutorials are fun to go through for this game. However, if different types of enemies attack together, you got to think which finger gestures are required to dispel them away. This usually calls for quick thinking and a calm cool head.

The most crucial part of this game is to monitor when your hunger bar goes to very low. This is because when it goes very low, your character will be a sitting duck to the enemies’ attacks and you can see your health bar getting low after that. To feed your character, you need to drag a fish from the waters when they jump out from the seas.

As for the game’s graphics, you can say they are pretty amateur, simple like your kid’s drawings. The fun factor lies in the animated graphics and the sounds they produce when they gets hit by your game character.

After each level you complete, there is a statistics screen which you can see how well you fare in your previous levels. The game lets you receive Godly powers and the ability to control Mother Nature. For example, the fire demons will attack you and you need to use water from the seas to destroy it. You can even summon a Volcano Eruption to destroy the Tree monsters.

You can also use your enemies as fuel for Godly weapons and powers. You can drag dead enemies to hit the other enemies. This game has a similar feel to pocket gods. If you like this genre of games, then check it out on iTunes.

Horror Racing Game Review – another gem from Chillingo

29 Sep

As usual, Chillingo has published a few good games recently. Horror Racing game is one game you will not want to miss if you are a vivid fan of racing cars. The game lets you experience what life is like racing behind a farmyard. You can choose which car you want to race with. Each of the cars have their respective owners. These characters do look weird from the start. Do note that you can only choose the car model in the Championship or Skirmish game modes. If you choose Quick Race, you cannot choose the car you want. Quick Race game mode is usually for those who like to have a quick go at this game.

In Horror Racing, you get to shoot your competitors and make them explode right in front of you while you race towards the finishing line. There are three fire buttons in the game which you can use. You do not need to worry about losing your life each time. The main focus of this game is to complete the race! Each time when your car explodes, you will be miraculously resurrected at the same spot you died.

At each of the turning points of the road, there are power-ups to be collected each time. The power-ups once collected will appear again for the next player who pass the same spot again.

The game controls are very simple to use. This racing game removes the brake and accelerate buttons to remove the complications of the controls. The gamer only needs to steer the wheel with the green arrow pointing to the direction he wants to navigate. Besides having the normal power-ups, the gamer can collect certain elemental weapons like shooting flames out of your car and collecting dark energy to trigger a lightning bolt attack on your enemies.

The racing track also have some traps to look out for. There are mines placed at certain positions of the track. Do look out for them or you will damage your car in no time! When driving along the track, you have to be careful of the fence. Some parts of the fence can tangle with your car and prevent your car from moving forward. I feel the fences gives the game a realistic riding experience as part of the obstacles on the track. There are ramps along the track which helps to lift your car in the mid air. You can use this feature in the game to gain a winning edge over the other opponents.

In this game, you earn points at the end of the race depending on the place you earned during the race. For the Skirmish game mode, you can notice your progress in the game does not earn you points or money to upgrade your car. This is because the Championship game mode focuses more on the prestigious title of who is the first while the Skirmish game mode is only focusing on the battles which occurred during the race.

In both the Championship and Skirmish game modes, there are stages waiting to be unlocked when you do especially well in the previous levels. In the Skirmish game mode, you can vary the number of laps to race in the game and alter the difficulty level.

What is a racing game without upgrades of the vehicle, you might ask? This game does offer you various upgrades for your car’s engine, weapons or armor. The upgrades are there to make sure you are fast enough to outwit your opponents or use devastating weapons to attack them. If you focus on defense, then you should upgrade your vehicle armor to see if your car can withstand their mighty attacks at the next round of the game.

When you order the upgrades, you will see brown markers changing to yellow. This usually means you have chosen some upgrades but have not confirmed your selection yet. To buy selected upgrades, tap the Confirm button. All yellow markers will turn into green which represent a successful purchase.

Overall, I feel this game is value for money. At $2.99 for three game modes, it is definitely a steal for such a price. The $2.99 price is already 25% off the usual price. For future upgrades of the game, I will prefer Bluetooth or Wi-Fi gaming so that I can play with my friends in this game. Multi-player game play is definitely a good to have feature when you are racing in such awesome cool vehicles.

Bastion Game Review

29 Sep

For those who like tower defense games, Chad Town has given us a game that is different from the rest. It is a mixture of strategy, action and puzzle elements in the game. There are 3 game save slots for you to save your progress.

Why I say this game has strategy elements in it? This is because you have to place the towers in a strategic place so that enemy ships cannot hit your towers so easily with their cannon balls. The normal action elements applies in this game as you can choose the location to fire your cannon ball from your defense towers at the ships. While you shoot the cannon balls, sounds of the fire and miss hits of the cannon balls are clearly heard in the game play itself.

The most intriguing part of this game is that you have to connect the roads from the towers to the armories so that they have a flag on the top of the tower and they have a constant supply of firepower from the armories. You can only build roads and buildings in the green parts of the map. If your object turns red, it means you cannot build it there.

The placing of the road uses some of Tetris’s logic. You can adjust the shape of your road parts like in the Tetris game. However, there is a time limit where you can adjust the road blocks carefully. You need precision and careful adjustments to do it well. For starters, I find it easier for me to place the towers close to the armory so that the distance for me to construct the roads is shorter. There are two buttons – the reverse button to rotate your road block and the plant object button which is shown as the downwards button situated on the bottom right of the screen.

In the game, you can also upgrade your units and buy new weapons. Weapons like Cannonball, Powder Keg Mine, Fireball and Bomb Shell are available for purchase in the game.

You will earn gold in the game by destroying the enemy ships. You can notice from the screen shot below that there are a few characteristics for the different warships.

This game does have a time limit as to how long you can attack the ships around your towers on the seas. You can play the game in Survival or Conquer game modes. The basic game rules applies for both game modes. You have to position the red cross hair at the enemy targets and press the bottom right button to shoot. The enemies are moving at fast pace. You have to aim your shot and take down the enemy as fast as you can.

Overall, I feel the scrolling of the red cross hair is slow because the enemy units are always moving. You need to move it carefully and position it to shoot. You need to use two fingers – one for scrolling the cross hair and the other finger to press the shoot button. When I doing the shooting, I will usually get multiple shots at one time so that I can ensure I got my target in no time.

Luckily, there are some automatic fire from my tower units or I will be dead in no time. There is a tutorial to follow for new players in the game. This game has 10 Campaign stages so for a price of $0.99, I will think it is worth buying. Great game overall but need some improvements for the scrolling portion of the cross hair.
