Penguin Break Game Review

Penguin Break is an addictive casual game that brings back my memories of the Puzzle Bubble game I used to play in the arcades when I am still schooling.

The game is played by shooting the colored balls towards the selected penguin. You can select the penguin you want to shoot by tapping on the screen. But you have to be careful which color of the ball you choose to shoot. Red balls goes for red penguins, blue balls goes for blue penguins and yellow balls goes for yellow penguins. If you choose a yellow ball to shoot a red penguin, you can only strike down 1 penguin.

Aiming for those same colored penguins in a row usually works better. This game is like a classic match three game. If you hit a penguin with a cluster of penguins with the same color, all the surrounding penguins that touch this penguin will disappear. The more you shoot, the more power-ups you gain in the game! You can slow down the penguins piling up towards the top by giving a good jolt on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

You will notice on the top right hand corner of the screen that there is a star meter. This meter is an indication of when you will receive your power-ups in the game.

The power-ups on this game are all bombs but they work differently. The normal bomb clears out all penguins that are within a certain radius. A smart bomb can make 14 penguins of the same color vanish at the same time. A change bomb is most useful in this game because it helps to change all the penguins to the same color of the snowball you are shooting. This makes you have the upper hand in the game.

You can play this game in Escape or Frenzy game modes. In the escape game mode, you have to stop penguins from piling up to the top. Once they pile up to the top, they will escape. In the Frenzy game mode, you have to clear all the penguins on the screen before the bottom right timer shows you that you are running out of time.

One thing I don’t like about this game is that the timer is placed at the bottom right of the screen. When shooting off the penguins, I need to glance back at the bottom timer to see whether I am running out of time. It will be better if the timer is placed in the top centre of the screen where it is more visible to the gamer.

I usually will get lots of fun seeing penguins making noises when I shoot them down. It is a classic cute game that retails for 99 cents. Quite worth buying if you ask me. You can also share your scores to let your friends know you are playing penguin break using Facebook Connect.
