Midnight Mysteries Haunted Houdini iPad Game Review

30 Apr

I played this game over the weekend and feel this game is fantastic. The game has some in-app purchases that are useful. For example, you can get the strategy guide for $1.99 which covers detailed walkthrough with useful tips and tricks. You can also pay $0.99 for 10 hints or $1.99 to get 50 hints you can use in the game.

The way the hints work in this unique hidden object game is that the raven will fly and reveal where some of the hidden objects are. The game is also packed with nice background music or sounds. For example, I can hear cricket sounds in the night.

You will definitely see many ghosts in this game. The ghosts gives me creeps when I play this game. The graphics and AI are done quite well in this game. The ghosts will command you to find certain things or even combine two objects together to form an unique object to solve another mystery. Most of the tricks the ghosts will do are magic tricks. For example, when the lady in the first level will show me a magic trick relating to cards. The tricks require you to find hidden objects in order for them to perform magic.

Sometimes, you get extra hints by tapping on the hidden raven in some parts of the picture.

One feature I dislike about this game is that the arrows in the game are misleading. I thought they are there to guide where to find the hidden objects but they are there to navigate the gamer where is the next stage. I feel this can be better communicated using voices of the characters inside.

The game helps the gamer to know when certain objects can be combined. For example, if certain objects cannot be combined, they will return back to the inventory slots. In most parts of the game, you definitely need the raven to guide you. For example, in level 2, Howard Thurston’s ghost requires you to pass him the deck of cards. I can’t figure out this without the raven. When the cards are passed to him, you need to solve a question imposed to you.

You can view your game progress by looking at the journal which stores what you did and what needs to be solved.

After you ask questions to the ghost, certain parts of the picture changes. The painting changes to a card face.

Then, you need to choose four cards out from the deck the ghost shuffled. You get to unravel more puzzles when you touch on different parts of the landscape that follows.  You will reach another door up on the staircase. You need to find the key that follows. They keys are on the staircase once you release the raven to reveal another hint. You will need 1 and 3 digits to combine together which makes a special key that unlocks the door.

The door will reveal a bedroom with special items. You can see a chest filled with special objects.

Overall, the game will drives the gamer deep into the mystery of Houdini and his relationship with a  magic society of friends. There are mini game levels besides  finding hidden objects in this game. You will not get bored playing this game. But some parts of the gameplay is difficult and you will need either the strategy guide to help you or use the raven to solve the puzzle. This game can definitely help the gamer by providing them with a magnifying glass to identify certain hidden objects in some of the levels. Blindly tapping on the picture sometimes will help but in order to solve the puzzle, you need to solve the mystery. I like the way the hints are designed. The idea to get the raven to fly and reveal the hidden object is creative and profound.

You might find the price tag of $6.99 expensive for such a game but the replay value of this game greatly surpasses that of the normal casual games I have seen so far on the iTunes App Store. You might want to pick this game up if you are fond of hidden objects and puzzle type of games.

iLogic Crimes iPad Game Review

22 Apr

I played this “iLogic – Crimes” game over the weekend on my iPad. It is similar to the boardgame Cluedo. The game lets you play as an investigator in different crime scenes. You need to find out who is the criminal or culprit by interviewing the suspects. There are three playable crime scenes while the other game scenes need extra points to unlock in order to play them.

The suspects will answer your questions and the answers will be logged in the log book. You can look at the answers they give you before deciding on who is the culprit of the crime scene. After you have decided on the culprit, you can do an accusation by tapping on the “Accuse” button. Sometimes, your decision may be a wrong one. If your decision is correct, you will win points to be used to unlock the new crime scenes.

The game introduce the how-to-play instructions in a book manner. You can easily flip the instructions like a book to get an understanding on how to play the game. It is a pretty simple to play game for the young and old. Even for the newcomers who have not played Cluedo will be able to pick up the basics of playing this game in no time.

The game is available in two languages – English and Deutsch. What I like about the game is that the developer has put in place some clues in the game introduction. The rest is up to you to decide who is the real culprit. I did have fun interviewing the suspects as the answers give me clues on who to suspect.

The game also have a wide variety of suspects with different characters. It makes the guesswork more difficult for you in the gameplay. If you can guess the suspect in the shortest amount of time, you will gain some bonus points.

What I dislike about this game is that it does not show the game scores you have accumulated while you playing the game levels. It should show me the scores so that I know when I can unlock the new levels inside the game.

Overall, I feel this game does help to keep me busy as the guesswork is not simple. You can kill some time playing this game when you waiting for a bus or train. It is one of those casual games that need investigative skills and you can pick up the gameplay in the least amount of time.

Graphics: 4 /5
Sound/Music: 4.8 / 5
Fun: 5/5
Addictiveness:  4.5 / 5
Value for money: 5 / 5
Overall:  4.5 / 5

The game is on sale for this weekend at 99 cents. Grab it while you can.
