This game is the winner of the first annual Great Game Awards (Seattle, July 2009) and has been massively popular on multiple platforms. Now you have a chance to find out why for yourself, and you don’t even have to spend a dime.

About the game:

Meet Nicole Rankwist, a journalist for a small paper in New York in the late 1920’s. After making a huge archeological discovery, her father mysteriously disappears! Nicole finds his diary and sets off on a quest around the world to track her father down and unravel this perplexing riddle.

As Nicole retraces father’s steps, she will visit seven exotic locations which have animated areas and immersive sound effects. Striving to unlock fragments of the Crystal Portal key, players will search for hidden objects and solve unique and intriguing puzzles. The seek and find aspect of the game requires players to first find “container items”, which show a menu with more searchable objects. In each location there are special items – pieces of puzzles for mini games which lead to unlocking a partial key for the Crystal Portal. The Mystery of the Crystal Portal has neither time limits nor penalties for random tapping, and there are time-based hints available. The game is developed and published by G5 Entertainment under license from ARTOGON.

Old Clockmaker’s Riddle Game Review for Mac

16 Mar

There is a lot of match 3 games out there for iPhone and iPad these days. But usually after playing them for awhile, you get tired and bored of them because the gameplay is repetitive. Playing a match 3 game on the Mac is a first time experience for me. I am using my mouse to choose the gems in this G5’s Old Clockmaker Riddle game on my MacBook 2008 instead of the usual tapping on the screen using my fingers.

The game starts with Mr Ryan explaining the rules of the game. It seems the Old Clockmaker casts a spell on the town. The old town starts to fall into decay while the clock spins backwards. Your job here is to complete the match 3 puzzles games in this game and start restoring each of the buildings in the town. It seems a daunting task at first but trust me, once you get the hang of this game, you can play comfortably while enjoying your cup of coffee in your room.

On top of the game menu, there is a progress bar to state the power meter. Once that meter is filled, you will reach a super god-like mode where you can destroy many gemstones at one go. However, this usually depends on how many gems you have cleared. On the left hand side, there is a match combo counter. Each time, you clear a match combo, this count will increase and you will know you are reaching close enough to god-like mode. On the bottom menu of the game, there are separate counters for the coloured gems meaning how many coloured gems you have cleared in total. There are no hint buttons in this game. However, you can have certain power-ups like the hammer which can smash certain gems when you are stuck. These power-up upgrades are only available after you complete certain levels and they are usually limited once you used them. You got to wait for it to be refilled to use it again.

Each of the levels in the game represent a building or a structure like the bridge. You also get to play bonus stages after each normal game level is completed. However, to solve the bonus levels takes more than your usual game skills in Bejewelled. The lucky part is that you can skip the puzzles in the bonus levels if you are unable to solve them in the game.

Overall, this game gives the usual Match 3 games a twist by adding a story mode in the game. You get to learn more about the mysterious town once you start solving the puzzles. This gives the gamer more motivation to solve each of the puzzles and save the town from the hands of the Old Clockmaker. You can also see the Clockmaker walking up and down in the town as you are choosing which game levels to play. The game has its own unique set of spell-binding music that lets you feel the mystery surrounding the evil Clockmaker while you start playing the game.

You can unlock the full game by paying for it within the game itself on your Mac. The game is free for everyone to try. If you are game for the challenge, you can try this game in timed mode instead of the usual relaxed mode.

As a consequence, they are instructed to find the source of his Evil, and wipe out all of his slaves before tackling the daemon himself.  Thus begins a violent, crazy journey of epic proportions!

Dungeon Hearts storming steam and iPads everywhere on March 28

7 Mar

Sliding Gems and Slaying Beasts –

Austin, TX – Independent developer Cube Roots and the devastatingly handsome gents of Devolver Digital have announced the match-three puzzler Dungeon Hearts will launch for $2.99 on PC and Mac via Steam and other digital PC services as well as iPad via the Apple App Store. Dungeon Hearts, the debut outing by Cube Roots, challenges players to combine dozens of different runes along the relentlessly flowing Fatestream and unleash powerful attacks and devastating combos on a colorful cast of foes. Strategy and speed are essential in conquering the Dark One as you build up your heroic team’s abilities and unlock special attacks and magical spells.

“Working on Dungeon Hearts over the last year has been an amazing journey, and I’m thankful to have had opportunities most indies don’t get on their first project. As the artist, designer, and programmer on the game I couldn’t have found a better publisher than Devolver Digital, who have allowed me to pursue my creative vision,” said Cube Roots founder Chris Pavia. “Also, their skill at making shady backroom deals and leveraging sexual favors to get Dungeon Hearts on Steam has proven to be an invaluable learning experience.”

Signed by Devolver Digital during GDC 2012’s “Pitch Fork Parker” initiative, Dungeon Hearts has since evolved and grown as Chris Pavia and his team designed, tested, and implemented new mechanics and features with a steady eye on the overall balance of the game. Through collaboration with Devolver Digital and a supportive circle of indie developers and gamers, the Cube Roots team has fine-tuned Dungeon Hearts to deliver a truly unique experience for puzzle gamers of all types.

“Let me be clear, there were no shady backroom deals or sexual favors exchanged despite what the developer might claim,” said Fork Parker, CFO of Devolver Digital, “All shady deals were out in the open and all sex acts were paid for in full.”
